The Best Free Streaming Services in the UK —
Most People Don't Know About Half of These

Before you add another paid subscription, check what you're already not using. The UK has one of the strongest free streaming ecosystems in the world — built largely on public broadcasting infrastructure that most households simply scroll past in favour of Netflix.
BBC iPlayer — The most underused free service in the UK
iPlayer carries the full BBC archive for up to 12 months after broadcast, plus live channels and a substantial library of BBC originals. If you have a TV licence, you're already paying for this. The quality of BBC drama, documentary and comedy output in 2026 is as strong as it's been in a decade — and all of it is free to stream, on demand, in HD.
ITVX — More than just catch-up
ITVX relaunched with a significantly expanded library and now carries thousands of hours of archive content alongside current-season ITV programming. The free tier is ad-supported and covers the vast majority of content; ITVX Premium (£3.99/month) removes ads and adds some exclusives, but the free version is genuinely strong.
Channel 4 — Strong on documentaries and film
Channel 4's streaming library has grown substantially. The documentary output — particularly true crime, social affairs and investigative journalism — is among the best available for free anywhere. The film library is eclectic and often surprising. Free, ad-supported, no account required to browse.
Pluto TV — 100+ themed channels for free
Pluto TV operates a linear channel model — you tune into a channel rather than choosing a title — which replicates the experience of traditional TV without the cost. There are channels for every genre: true crime, sport documentaries, reality TV, classic British sitcoms, motorsport, horror. No sign-up required.
Tubi — Surprisingly large US film library
Tubi is a US-origin free streaming service now available in the UK with a substantial film and TV catalogue. The content skews American but includes genuine classics alongside more recent releases. Free, legal, ad-supported. Worth checking before paying for a film rental.
