How to Watch UK TV Abroad —
Legally and Without the Faff
CouchCast Editorial · 18 April 2026 · 5 min read
You land in Spain, open BBC iPlayer, and get the "content not available in your region" message. It's one of the more reliable disappointments of modern travel. The good news: there are legal, straightforward ways around it — and some services have already done most of the work for you.
The services that work abroad without any effort
Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+ all allow international access — your subscription works in any country. The catch: the content library changes by region. If you're in France, you'll see the French Netflix catalogue, not the UK one. British shows may still be there, but not always.
The workaround: download episodes to your device before you leave. Netflix, Disney+ and Prime all support offline downloads on mobile and tablet. Download what you want on UK wi-fi before you travel and watch it anywhere, regardless of regional restrictions.
BBC iPlayer abroad — the honest answer
BBC iPlayer is geo-restricted to the UK. The BBC is funded by the UK TV licence and is legally required to restrict international access for most content. There is no official workaround for this — any method that appears to work involves routing your connection through a UK IP address, which the BBC's terms of service prohibit when done via a VPN.
The practical solution: download iPlayer content before you leave. The iPlayer app allows downloads for offline viewing on mobile devices, valid for up to 30 days. Download your programmes at home, watch them on the plane or in the hotel.
ITVX and Channel 4
Both are UK-only. The same download-before-you-leave approach applies. ITVX supports offline downloads on the mobile app for most content. Channel 4 does not currently support downloads — this is a gap in their offering that hasn't yet been addressed.
The download checklist before you travel
- Netflix: up to 25 titles, stored for 7–30 days depending on licence
- Disney+: up to 25 titles per profile
- Amazon Prime: up to 25 titles, stored for up to 30 days
- BBC iPlayer: up to 25 programmes, valid 30 days
- ITVX: most content available for download on the app
Before you fly: 5-minute checklist
- Download everything you want to watch on Netflix, Disney+, Prime
- Download iPlayer shows to the BBC iPlayer app
- Check ITVX for any current series mid-run
- Consider downloading a full series in advance for long trips
